Introduction

Hello Friends, myself Swati Rani I am from Bihar Muzaffarpur district, currently i am staying in Mysore where I have my home and family.

I have completed my masters in Music from my home town Muzaffarpur and then completed my PhD in Music from same town (Bihar university, Muzaffarpur).

From starting onward only, Music was my primary interest and always wanted to pursue

it as my carrier but due to family commitment and other responsibilities it was lost somewhere, I strongly feel that we must have some commitments to our self and for that

I was always striving it. During course of time I came across with Destiny Curves, and I felt that on this platform I can put forward my thought and can share my experiences.

I always feel that as a women we never justify to our talents while fulfilling daily chores of life.

So let us start a new chapter with destiny curves. Thank you.

Music theory – Part 1

When we talk about music, we should know what is music? In very simple terms we can define Music as combination of Vocal, instrumental and dance, when all these three elements come together is called Music.

On this platform we will talk about Vocal part of Music. When we talk about singing that is the vocal part Music, we should first know the building block of vocal music called “Swara”. They are like the alphabets of music.

But all the sound which is present around us does not qualify for music, any sound which is of uniform frequency is considered useful for music. In language of Music this form of sound is called “Naad”.  In simple term a sound (“Naad”) which is useful to music is called “Swara”.

Our ancient philosophers and Musician had done lot of work on “Naad” and after performing lot of experiments they divided Naad into 22 Parts called “Shruti”.

These 22 Shruti further divided in 7 “Swara”. You can consider “Swara” as Alphabets of Music.

Below are the 7 Swara with there names.

Till now, we learned about the “Theoretical” part of the Music. Now We will learn how we can establish these “Swara” in our Vocal chord. For this we have to first establish the base Swara “SA”.

In order to practice “SA” we will need “Harmonium”. In Harmonium 4th or 5th black key is considered for female voice. My scale is 5th black key which is called “A#”.

For practicing “SA”, we will follow a methodical approach, which is will teach in the subsequent videos. Just to give you a basic of that , below are the ways which is used for the “Riyaz” or practice.

We will start with Humming:
