Mathematics has been a fundamental part of human
civilization, evolving over centuries through the contributions of different
cultures. From ancient number systems to modern calculus, mathematical
discoveries have shaped the world we live in today.
Ancient Contributions to Mathematics
Mayan Mathematics: A Predictive System
In ancient Mexico, the Mayan civilization developed a highly sophisticated number system that allowed them to accurately predict astronomical events. Their vigesimal (base-20) counting system included a symbol for zero—an essential concept for mathematical calculations.
Chinese Mathematics: Advancements in Computation
China made significant mathematical advancements even when progress slowed in medieval Europe. The mathematician Liu Hui (263 CE) calculated the value of π (pi) to five decimal places using a 192-sided polygon. The first known abacus was also invented in China to assist civil servants in calculations related to taxation, wages, and engineering.
By the 13th century, Chinese mathematician Qin Jiu-Shao developed approximations for solving quadratic and cubic equations. These solutions were unknown in the West until the 17th century.
